A new list we're starting to compile:
-Herb at the Indian Cultural Center on the San Carlos Reservation in AZ. Used to be a hair dresser now makes and sells Indian jewelry. When he heard what we were doing he ask "WHY would you do something like that?"
-Lynn, cross country bike rider on his way to Olympia WA from Silver City we met at the market on the Reservation. He had a great tip about not doing Needles Eye Pass. Said he had met up with the WT's riders earlier and they didn't do that route this year! Best tip of the ride so far!
-Tom at the bike shop in Safford where we got a new bike computer. (our old one was being very unreliable). He seemed very unhappy and trapped in his shop. Lives in the back, wishes he could do a ride like we are but can't get away from the shop.
-George, about 75 in Tyrone NM chatted with us when we stopped for lunch. He seemed to know a good deal about cycling events and adventure. We could see a twinkle in his eye. He probably would have jumped aboard if we had an extra saddle.
-George, a different one, in Silver City was the customer in front of the bike shop. He eagerly volunteered to escort us through town on his bike to the RV Park.
-Jim, a young biker heading to West Virginia from Phoenix. Hadn't planned on doing the ride but when his van broke down in Phoenix he decided it is a great opportunity.
-Allison & Chess met them at the RV park in Silver City. Sold their home in Santa Fe and traveling until they find what is right for them.
-The Old Guy camped in a tent spot next to us in the RV park in Silver City who is a "snowbird". Lives in his tent during the winter in Silver City NM and rides the bus to Chicago and lives there during the summer. He seemed to have a plethora of plastic bags in his tent.
-Great Saints in Demming Ward , probably the most friendly and warm ward we've ever visited!
-Cosme the Postmaster in Hatch NM who was so kind and helpful even tho our forward order had just gotten there that morning and they had no mail for us.
-Mannie the Good Samaritan in Hatch NM who invited us to stay in his trailer and use his facilities. He not only opened his home to us but also his refrigerator! (we'll write more about him later in our Hatch NM post)
-Mary Lynn at Cider Mill in Medina. She is the mother of the new owner and lives high up on the top of the mountain coming out of Vanderpool. She said she had seen us climbing earlier. We chatted about our ride and she invited us to come stay at her ranch when we come again.
-Joann in Hico at the EZ DUZ IT RV Park. We arrived about 15 minutes before the office was closing and found they didn't have any "facilities". Because a storm was predicted and they "couldn't leave us out in the storm" she invited us to camp in their store/office for the night and use the restroom there. Can you believe? Inviting complete strangers to sleep in your office?
-David pulled up along side us on the road while we were resting and said "I just had to talk to you!" We chatted for a while and he told us about losing his wife to cancer a year ago and how he has cried every day for the last month. A really nice man. We shared our experience of losing our spouses. He wished us "God bless you" as we left.
