April 2 La Mesilla to El Paso 40 miles
Head winds all the way. Both of us were very tired and a little discouraged. Actually at one point took the road east instead of the one on route going west to avoid the head wind. Not as scenic but who's looking at the scenery when your head is down battling the wind. It was perhaps a bit shorter and less windy. Rusty proposed a plan: No more than two nights in a row in a tent. We stayed in a Motel 8 this night.
Even though this is our ride we feel some pull to fulfill our plans and keep to our schedule. The Davis Mountains with long mileage w/0 facilities and water and high elevation is next on our list and we are reconsidering. We are a week behind our schedule and our grandchildren in Helotes TX are expecting us April 13! We've decided to bypass that whole section of the route and go straight to the Texas Hill Country on our way to San Antonio! We can't miss that ride no matter how steep and rugged the way! We need those bragging rights!

I know how excited you must be, Mom, for the Texas hill country. "That's where Lance Armstrong trains" I remember you saying back during your Women's Tour days. You guys are awesome. Keep it up! We love you.
I agree with Dad--two nights in a row in a tent is enough!
Two nights in a row in a tent I could handle... it's the bike riding in between I couldn't!
