Drove to the charming town of Davis California up the
road to have our bikes checked over before we start the arduous mountains and
lonely desert part of the ride. J
Davis California is widely known as the “Bicycle
Capital of the World”. Wow! That’s quite a title! UC Davis probably contributes a lot to
that. There seemed to be a bicycle shop
on every block downtown Davis mixed in with great little gathering spots, cafĂ©’s
and deli’s with sidewalk tables. Several
outdoor clothing type shops, book stores
and art supply stores. The main street
is made up of a type of cobblestone with hanging flowers lining the street. Can you visualize it? Bikes were everywhere. Cute coeds on townies, serious students on
bikes with their messenger bags slung over their shoulders, older people with
baskets for errands….and none of these were wearing helmets! But then there were the serious spandex
cyclists as well.
We wandered and enjoyed while our bikes were getting
checked over which took a couple of hours.
Turned out that I needed a new front tire….there was a bulge that could
have been problematic on some of those great downhill runs. Rusty’s bike got a new shift cable to correct
a roughness in his shifting. We’re
suckers for bike shops and bought some new gloves, the latest energy waffles
and the best bike lube for the area.
Different lubes for different climates and we are definitely NOT on the
Oregon coast anymore.
Rusty’s turn to ride and he took off about 2:30 (late start) and rode 14 miles
from Davis to West Sacramento part of
which was on a “no motorized vehicles allowed “ path which he said really wasn’t
very scenic but was away from traffic.
Willie & Me drove to West Sacrament to the Vacaville
KOA campsite we had reserved. We’ve learned it is good to reserve ahead of time
because of our past experiences with “No Vacancy” campsites. I did laundry and started to set up camp when Rusty rode in.
