UNION CITY

May 8, Friday

The morning started with thunder and heavy rain about 8:30 when we were ready to head out. I got some black garbage bags from the motel clerk to wrap my panniers. Rusty's are waterproof. We watched the weather channel carefully. Thunderstorms in our area moving NE so we thought we would miss them since we were heading NW. Looked like we could ride but get wet. Then the Severe Weather Alert came on TV with the tornado warning until 4pm with 70 mph winds exactly in our area and including the area where we would be riding. So we signed up for another night in Super 8.
We've watched the rain and wind all day venturing out during a brief respite to get some fresh air, a Hardee's burger and a few groceries for the ride tomorrow. The forecast is for thunder storms all week. Rusty said that as we planned this ride months ago he thought our challenge wouldn't be hills but weather - tornadoes in the middle of the country in the Spring! The ride isn't flowing as smoothly as we would like. This ride is definitely teaching me patience. These layovers make me restless to get back on the bike! I was telling a woman at the post office in a little town the other day that this was a really inexpensive way to travel....well.......it can be. We're trying to economize with TV dinners in our motel room. Breakfast is provided. I'm buying one of those flip over waffle irons when we get home. I'm hooked!!!!
Well it's all part the adventure. Each day offers a new one! And we're getting caught up on lots of MASH episodes!!
