43miles
Monday morning was clear and we were ready to be "on the road again!" We rode off the MRT route and crossed into KY on a state highway with no shoulder. The rivers are very high with water on both sides of the road. The campground we had considered riding to Thursday is flooded! Good decision all the way around to stay in Union City.
We were planning on riding 53 miles to Cairo Illinois today but yesterday the Bishop said he didn't think it was safe to stay overnight in Cairo. We thought maybe he was just being cautious but along the ride we stopped in Clinton for a cold drink and a man we chatted with said "I don't think its safe for you to stay in Cairo". Well, okay. Two locals have given us caution. We decided to follow it.
RUSTY WISDOM:
While riding we had a few hills and one had a truck lane with a 6% grade. At the top while we were resting I said: "Here comes a big truck laboring up that hill. Rusty said " Yes, Big trucks and Rusty do not do 6% grade very well."
I took a picture of a man on his riding lawn mower and he got off to chat. We talked about the culture in "these parts" and the differences from the North. One thing he said is in Illinois the people say Y'uns not Y'all. And Up'ere for up there. Haven't heard that yet but we'll be listening for it. Yesterday I had mentioned to Kent and Beverly that I noticed there were a lot of riding mowers and big yards even with very small houses. Kent said that it didn't matter the size of the house if you didn't have at least five acres and a pond you didn't rank.
