23 miles
Riding this short ride to Savanna we made some new friends along the trail, Mary and Ron Martial. They are experienced recumbent cyclists who escorted us to the "hidden entrance" to the bike trail and rode with us on into Savanna. We crossed over the about 1/4 mile unique bike bridge that crosses over a railroad yard. We exchanged info and hope to keep in touch with them at least with Christmas cards. We've invited all of our new friends we've met on this ride to come see us in Waldport and we hope they will.
We stopped in at the library and spent a couple of hours on the computer updating the blog and catching up with the outside world. Rusty found a cozy spot in a big soft chair by the fireplace to read. The library is charming! Even still have the card catelog system for hunting down books.
The whole town is charming. We think it would be a fun place to live. There was a little house across the street from the library for sale that looked in our price range. The town reminds us of the small towns in movies i.e. The Majestic. Kind of locked in time. Quaint old middle America houses from our memories. Reminds Rusty of where he grew up. There were homes mixed between ornate with gingerbread trimmings and the Midwest flat fronts or balcony with pillars. Other than scenery I've taken pictures mostly of the homes along the ride that seem to be unique to the areas.
We were going to ride to Galena (which means lead ore) another thirty miles but when we told people our destination for the day we would get the response "Oh! You're going UP to Galena". I may have mentioned before that our trail book makes very little note of altitude AKA as HILLS. We decided to stay in Savanna and start out fresh early in the morning when "the roads rise up to meet us."
