LAKE MILLS WI TO WAUKESHA, WI

June 4, Thursday
44 miles

Our clear moonlit night turned out to be cold sleeping! Maybe if we had put our rain cover on the tent we'd have been warmer but who wants to get up in the middle of the night and go out in the cold to do that?
And I guess we should have been more serious about the 'panthers' in the tall grass. That "healthy, hearty, heavy biker's bread" we were so excited to finally find turned out to be a midnight snack or early breakfast for some creature living in the tall grass. This was the first night of our whole ride, and our last night, when we didn't take our bike gear into the tent with us. It was so clear and dry that we just left the panniers on the bikes and just our luck that all the panniers were closed up tight except one.....the one with the bread. All that was left was pieces of the plastic bag all chewed up and the crusts. If the creature was hungrier than we were, we're happy to share.
We rode trails all day today and I have really enjoyed the new tires I got in Burlington IL. They are 28's instead of the 25's I had. It makes for a smoother ride especialy on the packed gravel trails.
Along the path at Farmington Rd at 11:30 AM we hit 1,500 miles! Wahoo! We're not going to make 1,600 like last year's ride but we'll come pretty close.
