Need - Nice- NUTS to have!

We have been in Tempe Arizona for three days visiting Georgia's son Scott and wife Kirby and doing the final preparations to begin our ride tomorrow. The bike suitcases survived the TSA scrutiny and arrived safely. We took a deep breath and proceeded to put the bike together. The Twos Day (our Tanden) got its final checkup to fine tune the gears and we had a couple of camping items to pick up at REI and Lowes. Then the real test. Could we get everything we planned to take in to the trailer and the front panniers? It was a tense few moments. We each knew the other had brought too much stuff and there wasn't room for it all. Have you heard the little adage? "Some things we NEED to have, Somethings are NICE to have, and some things are NUTS to have."" We used controlled tones, smiling faces and properly selected words to communicate to the other person to send some of their"NUTS to have" stuff home. It was a compromise. We each sorted through our stuff for another time and each came up with some unnecessary items. This process will probably be gone through again as we decide there is too much stuff, no matter how important it may seem, to haul up those mountains one more time. I think about the pioneers who threw things out of the wagons along the way to lighten the load. Not that we deserve their admiration or sympathy but I guess if they could do without, we certainly can. For certain when we complete this odyssey we'll realize that most things we think we NEED to have are really just nice or completely NUTS!

I love STUFF! I would need a really big trailer, like a trailer home, or a mobile home, hmmm that would be tough to pull with a bike wouldn't it. Of course, if I stayed home I wouldn't have to pull it and I would have all my STUFF around me!!! Problem solved.
Love you guys! Good luck!

We're both excited to read about your trip along the way. I'd love to know what some of your "nuts" items were. Hope it wasn't anything like toothpaste. :) Good luck!!
