Today we are getting serious! We now have a blog! As the time gets closer for our departure on our epic ride, as one of our sons-in-law has called it, butterflies of various origin are taking up residence. Are we crazy or demented? Are we adventurous or overzealous? Are we pioneers and examples for kids, grand kids and our old friends? We think we are all of that and more. We hope to be memory makers extraordinaire and are excited to begin!!
We have our airline tickets for departure to Phoenix where the epic ride begins March 17, 2008. The Bike Friday tandem ,which is called a Twosday, is all serviced and ready to go. We have been spinning and cycling and walking and shopping and sorting. Rusty has been hunched over maps and searching sites on the computer for weeks looking for the perfect route with campsites and churches along the way. It looks like we're really going to do this!
The ride is planned to include a visit to twenty of our grandchildren from Phoenix to Wisconsin. It will be approximately 4,000 miles and three months in the saddle. Originally we wanted to make the complete loop up to the Northern Tour, across to Idaho and then down to Utah but, in that regard, we were overzealous and prehaps a bit unrealistic. It sounded really great as we talked about it but as it was getting mapped out on paper we realized it was a bit too much for one trip. We hope to complete the loop next year.
We invite family and friends to check in on us occasionally on this blog site. We'll be updating as computers and libraries are available along the way. You can be sure that we are traveling light and are not taking any extra ounces which includes electronic equipment other than cell phones, which probably will be out of range the majority of the time.
We just got our bike travel cards (like business cards) in the mail today. They will come in handy as we meet and make new friends along the way.
So welcome aboard! We hope you enjoy the journey with us!
